Abstract:

Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is the central government response to the constitutionally manifested right to work and means to promote livelihood security in India’s rural areas. Mahatma Gandhi NREGA is the flagship rural employment generation programme in rural areas for 100 days in a financial year. The Act stipulates that wages will be equal for men and women workers. This Act is also committed to ensuring that at least 33 percent of the workers shall be women. By generating employment for women at fair wages in the village, MGNREGA can play a significant role in economically empowering women and laying the basis for greater independence and selfesteem. One of the most unique features of Mahatma Gandhi NREGA is its approach towards empowering citizen including women citizen to play an active role in the implementation of the scheme, through gram sabha, social audit, participatory planning and other activities.
