In the recent years the development in mobile communication systems requires the development of low cost, lighter weight, antennas that are capable of maintaining high performance over a wide spectrum of frequencies. This technological trend has pointed much effort on the design of a Microstrip patch antenna. This paper describes review of microstrip patch antennas. This antenna has made great movement forward in recent years. Microstrip patch antennas have better prospects and more advantages with respect to conventional antennas. They are lighter in weight, low cost, low profile, low volume, smaller in size and ease of fabrication and conformity. The microstrip patch antennas also can provide circular and dual polarizations, agility of frequency, good band-width, beam scanning omnidirectional patterning. Also in this paper application of microstrip patch antenna with their merit and demerits over conventional microwave antennas are discussed.
