Smart grid is an advanced way of energy transmission, distribution, control, planning and measurement which supports the monitoring and management of distribution systems through a two-way communication system. Efficient power transmission and distribution is very important for providing societies with essential energy resources. Smart meters are vital component of the smart grid. Smart metering is the automatic reading, processing and transmission of metering data with bidirectional data communication in real-time that support additional services and applications,  automation, remote disconnection of supply or load limitation, remote update of meter firmware to enable new services, communication protocols, etc. This paper highlights the need, structure & benefits of smart meter. The role of smart metering infrastructure for executing different tasks in context to today’s smart gird environment is also presented.
