Abstract:

Supercapacitors (SC) have become popular for very high capacitance, high energy density, long cycle life, quick charge and discharge, small size and environmental friendly performance over batteries and conventional capacitors. However single cell Supercapacitor can only withstand 1 to 3 V maximum. To utilise SCs, are required to be connected in series or parallel based on applications. Connecting SC in series offers challenge of voltage balancing across the series module. Voltage balancing is necessary to have better cycle life and efficiency of SC module. This paper presents various voltage balancing circuits used for voltage balancing, advantages of active balancing circuits over passive balancing circuits. Design of Buck boost converter circuit is discussed in detail; MATLAB simulation results from literature are discussed.
