Over the last years the big data is most focused, as it is a collection of large amount of data .Today it is applied in computer science and also in various field related to real life such as academic, industry, government, commercial website, etc. In this paper we discuss about the big data, the characteristics of big data (3v’s) which are volume, velocity, verity and some other characteristics. We also discuss about the security issues in big data, the advantages of big data, what is the need of security in big data. Big data is applied in many application fields and this is also discussed in this paper .the related work in big data is also given and the issues and challenges related to current development in big data, what are the needs to develop further in future is discussed in the paper.
